Welcome to the Newport Yacht Club
Newport, Rhode Island, known as "the City by the Sea" is home to the Newport Yacht Club (NYC). We are located in the Northeast corner of the harbor where our members, their families and guests enjoy one of the finest yachting facilities that New England has to offer.
As stated by our Club Historian Jack White, the Newport Yacht Club was organized in April, 1894, and chartered in May of that year. At the first meeting, with nine men present, the objective of the club was stated: "This Club shall be
known as the Newport Yacht Club and shall have for its objective the encouragement of yachting in and around Newport.” To that end, the Club hosts or sponsor several international sailing events including the Bermuda ONE TWO, and the OSTAR. We support one design racing at the national and international level. Our spring and summer racing series for one design and PHRF is open to all sailors. The NYC has developed one of the finest youth and adult sailing programs offered on Narragansett Bay.
The Club is the home site for Rogers High School sailing team to train and compete. NYC provides a venue for the Newport City Council to host officials from our sister cities throughout the year.
The Seamen's Church Institute (SCI) remains the Club's principal philanthropy. We will continue to support SCI as they provide "a haven for all men and women of the sea" and support services for families in need.
Please browse our web site for event schedules.
Looking forward to greeting you at the Club,
Norman Bailey
