Additionally, we have a new set of procedures and an additional legal waiver for camp this summer developed in light of compliance with heath regulations around COVID-19.
Please review the document, read the procedures, and sign the waiver.NYC-MAC-2020-Camp-Procedures-and-Release-of-Liability
You may do this electronically and send it to email@example.com or bring it in person on the first day of camp. We need to have a signed waiver and procedures acknowledgement from each parent before your child can participate. Thank you for your support and patience! Welcome to summer!

Update: Friday May 29, 2020
Since Gov. Gina Raimondo’s announcement that Summer Camps can open on June 29th, we have been working behind the scenes to develop a plan to make this a reality for the Newport Marine Adventure Camp. We are pleased to say that on May 28th, the Board of Newport Yacht Club approved our plan to start camp on June 29th.
It will look a little different this year, with reduced numbers (20 per session) and kids will have to stick to an assigned group of just 10 kids. However, this is not much different as we have always operated! Small groups for instruction is just how it works with sailing.
New procedures such as a staggered drop offs and pick-ups, temperature checks on arrival, and a designated area and bathrooms just for junior sailors and instructors only will allow us to accommodate and operate safely during this time. Our instructors will be wearing face coverings and we are encouraged by the CDC regulations that children also wear them as tolerable. However in sailing, it has been common recently to wear neck gaiters or “buffs” as sun protection so we will be getting some for our campers that will be supplied on the first day, to help us both distinguish visually the groups (they will be different colors for different groups) and allow us when gathered closely to adhere to social distancing.
More detailed procedures will be provided over the coming weeks as we get ready for camp but we wanted to get the word out sooner than later that camp is open! Help us spread the word to your families and friends as this only will work if we can fill the sessions.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Email is the most effective form of communication as we are not fully operating in the office yet, but if you would like a call back, please leave a number in your emai
In 2015, Newport Yacht Club launched its first ever NYC Marine Adventure Camp with huge success and we continued to grow into 2019. Over 180 campers join 6 instructors over 8 weeks for fun on the water each year.
The mission of the Camp is to provide access to sailing, sailboat racing, and marine education for ages 8-15 from any level or background. (Please note we have had an age change our policy this year from past year.) Due to proximity to some of the best sailing resources in the world, NYC is in a unique position to provide quality nautical and sailing instruction for the youth of the Narragansett Bay.
The focus of the program is fun and of course, safety. The Camp aims to be an alternative to a racing focused program.
So for the fifth year, our Marine Adventure Camp will be broken into FOUR 2-week full day sessions and a combination of activities unique to meet the mission.
- Introduction to basic sailing skills in dinghies (Optis, 420s, and Open BICs) and big boats (2 Ensigns, a J-22, and NYC Member Yachts) to learn concepts like steering, sail positions, and wind awareness.
- Exposure to beginner marine navigation skills – charts, weather, docking, anchoring
- A focus on Marine Education – conservation, local geography, and sustainability
- For Intermediate and Advanced Sailors, including returning MAC Campers, we will be breaking the groups into different levels throughout the camp to differentiate learning and continue to grow their skills
