Dudley Hughes Obituary
Dudley Hughes, 92, passed away on April 6, 2025. Born in New York City to the Reverend William Dudley Foulke Hughes of Newport RI and Marguarite Jay Hughes of New York City. He was a graduate of South Kent School, the University of Rochester, and the University of Michigan Law School. He served in both the Navy and the Army leaving the former just early enough that he was drafted into the latter and sent to Korea where he served in a military policemen’s unit during the final year of the Korean War.
After returning from service. He completed his undergraduate degree and married Rosamond Carter of Baltimore, Maryland. They met as students at the University of Rochester and lived together as newlyweds in Ann Arbor while Dudley attended law school and then moved to Philadelphia where Dudley practiced law for twenty-four years, while raising a family in Bryn Mawr, PA. Dudley was an active member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Rosemont serving on the vestry, as an acolyte, and singing in the choir. A pianist and organist, he regularly played the organ at his church and occasionally served as back up organist or choir director when needed.
In addition to his work and faith, Dudley enjoyed sailing on the New England Coast, particularly in Maine and on Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island. He competed in one transatlantic race from Newport to Spain and as well as in the Fastnet Race in England. In his fifties, he and his wife bought a 42’ cutter, sold their house and spent three years sailing around the world.
Upon completion of their voyage, they settled in St. Croix, VI where Dudley practiced law as an assistant attorney general and served as organist and music director in St. John’s Episcopal Church in Christiansted and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Frederiksted.
He was preceded in death by his brother John Jay Hughes and his sister Jane Hughes Gignoux. He is survived by his wife Rosamond, his sister Linden Gaspar of Gainesville, GA his son Carter Hughes of Sitka, AK, his son and daughter-in-law John and Debra Hughes of Wickford, RI, his daughter and son-in-law Frances and David Smith of North Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, grandchildren: Holly, William, Malachi, John, and Rosamond and great grandchildren: Connor and Eleanor.
