COMMODORE’S CORNER

Commissioning Day – “Bravo Zulu.”  Well done to the General Manager and the staff for doing a fantastic job, despite difficult weather conditions, providing a wonderful Commissioning Day Event.

Members invited to get involved! Following up on the message from the Fleet Captain, underway events are planned for this summer and I highly encourage those who can, to participate. It is a chance to meet up with old friends, meet new friends, and help new members experience the Club while on water.

The first chance to get underway with the Club was the Fleet Rendezvous on the 21st of June at Mackerel Cove…look for additional information on future events provided by the Fleet Captain.

Thank you for your support and I hope you all have a happy and safe summer on the water.

See you at the Club,

FJ Ritt, Commodore

COMMUNITY SPIRIT: GOLD STAR SAILING

Join us in welcoming the Gold Star Sailing Youth Program to the Newport Yacht Club.   The camp begins the last week in July this year. On Monday, July 28th NYC Big Boat Captains will volunteer to host the annual afternoon sail in and around Newport Harbor. Then on Tuesday, July 29th, NYC will host a BBQ Dinner on the lower deck with the Club Flag Officers, the Mayor of Newport and Coast Guard Station Newport in attendance.

Donations are always appreciated for this exceptional program. Additional details and a donation link are found on the Gold Star Sailing website: https://goldstarsailing.org/about-us

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

OFFSHORE COMMITTEE

On 6 June 12 brave souls, all single-handed, started racing to Bermuda in the Bermuda One-Two. We had to postpone the start for 20 minutes due to no wind. The southeast came in and they were able to sail out of the bay.  We have one woman sailing this year and it’s her first time in this race, Erica Lush from Jamestown, RI. She has been sailing in the top of the fleet. Ted Singsen and I flew out to finish them in St. George, Bermuda.

The fleet has been subjected to random squalls up to 35 knots after a period of 4-6 hours of very little wind. The Awards in Bermuda were held at the St. George’s Dinghy & Sports Club Tuesday 17 June. The start the return leg was Thursday 19 June.

JUNIOR SAILING

On June 23 2025, the Junior Sailing Season began with session 1.  It is not too late to support our program with “Name The Boat” donation of $500. We will get the name on the boats for the first camp, so it will be visible on the bay all season!

We have confirmation from USCG with dates to provide education to our campers.  Thank you Greg Bader for spearheading that. The Sailing Museum has communicated their willingness to provide experiences to the campers as well. Thank you Aedan Gleeson for spearheading that. We continue to work on Aurora as well as the Perry.  I am confident they will participate in some capacity.  The Aquarium and Save The Bay have been contacted and are in the process of giving us dates they can offer education to our Junior Sailors. Thank you all committee members for your hard work!

On the first day of camp for each session, the Harbormaster will provide an orientation of rules and regulations for a safe sail camp experience.

I will be placing dates on the club information board for member volunteers to offer their service for the “BIG BOAT” event.  This year we are keeping it simple with a 1/2 day sail, leaving club in the morning and return by noon.  If interested, please notify any committee member, or sign up on the posted sheet on the date you are available.

We have eight scholarships from students of Pell School, one from FAB Newport and six that were independent applicants.  I am proud that the program is able to provide this experience to Newport residents who otherwise would not have that opportunity.  It is a great giving back to our community, we should all be proud as a club.

Respectfully submitted,

Albert Sgambato, Chair Junior Sailing
