Cliff Mitchell Family Trophy: SeaJai – Jim and Seamus Hennigan
New England ShortHanded Ocean Racing Trophy: not awarded on even years
NOTES:
7/26 1700: The Awards party was held at the Newport Yacht Club on a nice day while the Folk Festival was being held at Fort Adams. Parking is almost impossible. However, about 40 people showed up for the Awards which surprised me and very nice to see. SeaJai skippered by Jim and Seamus Hennigan were awarded the Cliff Mitchell Family Trophy. Afterwards people did the usual gabbing about the race accompanied with food put out by the Newport YC crew.
I would like to acknowledge all the people involved in running the race.
On Race Committee boat: Peter Jencks and Caryn Cummings handling the flags, Kristen Wenzel on the horn, Ted Singsen calling the line, Bill Shea taking pictures and Roy Guay doing timing and radio.
Duty Desk: Bill Croasdale 8pm to midnight, Ray Renaud midnight to 6am, Ted Singsen 6am to 10am and Roy Guay 8am through the Awards.
Breakfast and Awards food: Tim, Bill, Lynn and crew.
Newport Yacht Club Staff under direction of the General Manager Hallie Payne. This year more so than years in the past, having the Folk Festival running at the same time as the Solo/Twin has created a difficult time getting dock space for the boats and the dock staff worked hard trying to find dock space.
7/26 1329: Last boat to finish but grabbing second was Windswept.
7/26 0539: First boat to finish, Res Potentia. In the same area was Vento Solare, who had withdrawn, was motoring in the the spinnaker wrapped around the forestay and two balloons flying on the forestay! Other boats that withdrew are: Vamoose decided to withdraw after started real late and incurring a minor injury, Karliea who had a jib jammed and unable to unjam it until after the Thunderstorm went through when there was no wind for quite a while.
Speaking about thunder storm, a long line of cells hit the whole fleet. Some had wind gusts to mid 30s for a short while and others didn’t see significant gusts but all had rain.

1826: Memory rounded BI SW.
1743: Digger rounded then Coconut rounded.
1720: Captain Sluggo called in that they were retiring. Most of the boats are in extremely light air.
1600: Fearless called and texted that they lost most electronics. Are sailing home.
1655: Goat Rodeo rounded mark 1. Dragon having problems getting to the mark but looks like he is making it. Lots of boats going Clockwise around Block.
7/25 1611: Res Potentia rounded the first mark south-west of BI. Fearless has withdrawn. Loss of most of electronics; VHF 25W, autopilot, etc. All is well and headed home under sail.
7/25 1530: started hailing the fleet on VHF about a string of cells coming over the whole area and should go over the fleet. We started getting rain, thunder and lightning in Newport around 1600.
07/25 1300: And they are off. Plenty of wind for the start 15-22 kts SW. A few problems on the start; Karelia let himself get way below the line and started quite late. Vamoose had halyard problems and went back into the harbor to fix it and requested to start late and did but it looks like they continued to have problems since they are heading back home; too bad.
